Why did IHOP change its logo? ›

Why the change? The company's old logo apparently looked too despondent. IHOP's vice president of marketing Kirk Thompson tells BuzzFeed News that the prior design “appeared as a person's frown,” which “was not in concert with guest expectations.”

Designed by Kansas City's Studio Tilt, the mark is meant to be read as a smiley face. A simple, red swipe under the “eyes” of "O" and "P" is supposed to make you think of all the happily bulging waist bands trotting out of IHOPs doors after a feast of banana pudding pancakes.

The restaurant chain, which was founded in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California, says the smile reflects how its pancakes put a smile on the faces of its customers; but clearly it's also a nod to the social media age.

It is owned by Dine Brands—a company formed after IHOP's purchase of Applebee's, with 99% of the restaurants run by independent franchisees.

What did they try to rename IHOP? ›

After teasing a name change from IHOP to IHOb — including a dramatic flipping of the “p” in their logo to a “b” — the company formerly known as the International House of Pancakes reveled their new name as the International House of Burgers.

IHOP is known for its specialty pancakes, such as the popular tres leches, the protein-packed lemon ricotta with blueberry and the tasty strawberry banana pancakes.

Every year at the end of February or beginning of March, National Pancake Day raises money for charity. IHOP restaurants began National Pancake Day in 2006. Since that day, they have raised close to $30 million for charities. In 2024, IHOP is celebration National Pancake Day on February 13.

But if you do start to wonder, you might be surprised to know there's a definitive reason why IHOP's egg dish is fluffier, airier, and more filling than most. As it turns out, that massive mountain of eggs isn't just eggs after all. The omelettes are actually made with some pancake batter in the mix.

While the griddles themselves likely vary from one diner chain to the next, diners are pretty much all working with a waffle iron or griddle that's already hot. IHOP, for instance, requires its pans to be heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and uses Crisco instead of butter to grease it, says Grimm.

IHOP flipped the "P" in its name to become IHOb, the International House of Burgers. The stunt was just an attempt to let people know they had burgers and not just pancakes. It didn't take long for IHOb to go back to IHOP. It has stayed that way for a blissful year of just regular old pancake slinging.
